Many painful foot conditions can be caused or worsened by wearing poor-quality footwear, and these can cause a great deal of discomfort and can even be debilitating. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plantar fasciitis<\/strong>. Plantar fasciitis is a common injury amongst runners and can be extremely painful and preventing you from exercising. The plantar fascia is the thick band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes, and when this becomes torn or inflamed, it causes severe pain, which usually worsens when walking or running. Wearing good, supportive sports shoes can help prevent this condition from occurring, and can also ease the pain and help with rehabilitation. If you have plantar fasciitis, you will need to take a break from running or walking to allow the injury to heal before using specific physio exercises to rehabilitate the injured area. You may find swimming a helpful form of exercise to try while your feet recover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Bunions<\/strong>. <\/em>Wearing shoes with a narrow toe box or high heels (unlikely for sports!) can crush the toes together and lead to the development of bunions. Bunions occur when the toes are pushed out of alignment and a hard, bony growth develops on the side of the big toe. This can be very painful, limiting your mobility, and can also make it difficult to find shoes that fit. It is a good idea to look for shoes with a wide toe box so that your toes can spread, and to ensure that your feet feel comfortable inside your shoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Achilles Tendinitis<\/strong>. <\/em>The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, and an injury to this tendon can be debilitating. Achilles tendinitis occurs when this tendon becomes inflamed, usually as a result of overuse, such as when running. Complete rest will be required to allow an Achilles tendon injury to heal, and a physiotherapist will be able to work with you using specific exercises to facilitate recovery. Wearing sports shoes that are designed to absorb the shock when your feet strike the ground can help protect against and prevent injuries to the Achilles tendon and can provide support to the foot to help maintain stability and comfort.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Shin splints<\/strong><\/em>. As the name suggests, shin splints affect the shins and can cause excruciating pain and tenderness, which can prevent you from exercising. This is another injury caused by overuse of the joints and muscles involved in running or playing sports, and good, supportive shoes will help to reduce the risks by cushioning the feet and providing essential support. If you have shin splints, you will need to take a break from the form of exercise that has led to the problem and try a more gentle form of exercise, such as swimming, instead.
