When you\u2019re starting out as a surfer, decisions about your kit can feel overwhelming and doing your research can help you to make the most of your investment. Watching the pros, you\u2019ll see shortboards, longboards and foamies, all in different lengths and widths, and it\u2019s not easy to work out what to choose. Getting the size of your board right will make the whole process much easier and help you to feel confident on the waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in Ireland, we\u2019re lucky to have a great range of beautiful beaches, including the world famous Bundoran and Lahinch, and you\u2019ll find that many are well suited to beginners as they get to grips with the art of surfing. Let\u2019s take a look at surfboard sizing and share all the information you need to work out the best options for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfboards: Size Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first thing to bear in mind is that more experienced surfers often use smaller boards, because these are more responsive and can offer superior handling. Many beginners believe that a small board will be the best choice because it is easier to manoeuvre, but the opposite is true. A larger board will float better and paddle faster, so you\u2019ll be able to find your way with surfing without exhausting yourself, and this is very important when you\u2019re practicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with any new sport, learning to surf is all about the practice and the more you can get out on the water, the faster you\u2019ll improve. You\u2019ll need a good wetsuit to cope with spending long periods of time in the water in Ireland, where the sea is cold all year round, and finding a board that really works for you will make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Surfboard: Length, Width and Volume <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are three important elements to consider when you are choosing what size surfboard to try: length, width and volume. Here’s the information you need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length.<\/strong> We recommend that most adult beginners try a board that is between 8 and 9 feet long when they are first learning to surf. These are often referred to as \u2018foamies\u2019 or beginner longboards, and are used by surf schools because they are the best entry level option. A longer board such as this is much easier to paddle, even for those who have not built up their upper body strength yet, and enables you to catch the waves earlier. You\u2019ll also find that it offers a more stable base so that you can attempt standing and finding your balance more easily. Shorter adults or teenagers might opt for a slightly shorter foam board, perhaps 7\u20196\u201d – 8\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Width.<\/strong> The width of your surfboard is a very important factor in its stability, and a wide board will be much easier to manage when you are first trying to stand up. Beginner boards are usually around 20 – 23 inches wide, and although the narrower boards may look appealing, they will not give you the same balance so you will not be able to progress in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volume. <\/strong>You\u2019ll notice that surf shops often mention volume, measured in litres, and this is a helpful measurement that combines length, width and thickness. The volume you should opt for is usually determined by your weight, with those under 65kg advised to try a 60-70 litre board when they are starting out, while those between 65 and 80 kg are likely to find a volume of 70-85 litres more helpful. For surfers from 80-95kg, a volume of 85-100 litres is ideal, while surfers over 95kg will find boards with more than 100 litres volumes the best choice. As you gain experience, you\u2019ll learn how to handle a board with less volume, regardless of your own weight, but a high volume will give you the float you need to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as the length, width and volume, you\u2019ll need to consider whether you want a soft top or a hard board. We always recommend soft top boards, or foamies, for beginners as these are safer and more buoyant, as well as more durable when you\u2019re learning the ropes.
