The Assos iJ. shaqUno is unique in the Assos Jacket line up. For starters it is cheaper than you might expect at what Assos term a 'welcome, thank you' price point - not the catchiest granted, but we understand what they mean! Fundamentally, the iJ. shaqUno is a 2-layer construction where but the layers are not bonded together and this allows excellent freedom of movement within the jacket. The internal layer is constructed of Assos' legendary RX fleece fabric for superb low-bulk insulation and is cut slightly smaller than the outer layer. The external, slightly larger cut layer, is basically a protective shell that is breathable at the same time as being water resistant - so no need to carry an extra layer with you.
In recent seasons Assos have spent a lot of their time minimizing bulk in their garments at the same time focusing on thermoregulation - aiming to mimic our bodies ability to trap air and insulate when cold and cool us when warm. The iJ shaqUno is made in such a way that the RX layer, as well as insulating is also adept at wicking moisture away from the body while the 'pocket' of air between the layers further enhances both insulation at lower speeds and wicking when the pace increases. The protective outer layer finishes the job whilst keeping the elements outside.
As with most Assos garments the fabrics used have been developed in-house and are not commercially available, similarly they are unique in that they are cut to fit the body in the cycling position - what Assos call AEPD - which helps maximise their performance.
Assos make no bones about price. We often see Assos dismissed out of hand as a result of ticket prices, but as they and we will tell you; Assos do not cut corners, ever. It is the long term light that Assos needs to be viewed in. Off the peg it may seem expensive but their construction and longevity will pay dividens over the long term all the while offering you the very best in performance and comfort.
The idea behind the shaq Uno is to have a jacket that is little more than a jersey in terms of size but that behaves better when the winter really takes hold. With sensible base layer choice it is therefore possible to extend it's useful range from early winter to deep winter.
Assos are one of the world's pioneers and specialists in producing high quality cycling clothes and accessories. They are located in a region of Switzerland that has maintained a long standing tradition in first class textile engineering. In the 1970's, Toni Maier-Moussa, founder and chairman of Assos accidently invented lycra cycling apparel, whilst trying to create the ultimate bicycle.
During the wind tunnel tests of the first ever carbon-fiber bike, Toni inadvertently found that lycra downhill ski racing suits had much less drag than the woolen-knitted cycling clothes of the time. To this day Assos firmly believe in total product competence, delivering optimum function and comfort, by researching and making its cycling apparel and accessories from the very best materials.
