An E-bike is an exciting purchase, however as they come equipped with a lithium-ion battery it’s important to be aware of how best to care for them. Below we give a rundown of our top E-bike and battery safety tips.
Always buy an E-bike from a reputable seller

Buying a cheap alternative on an online auction or fulfilment site might be tempting but it is not worth the risk. More often than not the batteries used on these bikes do not meet the required safety standards. These safety regulations are there to reassure you what you’re buying has been vigorously tested and considered safe to use.

Store The Battery At Room Temperature
Keep your battery at room temperature. Avoid leaving it in warm areas (including direct sunlight) where it can overheat and become a hazard or damage the battery. You should also refrain from putting your battery in the freezer! It’s a strange myth that circulated. This could also permanently damage the battery.
Avoid Leaving On Low Battery
It’s best practice to leave your battery with a healthy amount of charge before re-charging it. Leaving it below 10% can gradually wear lithium-ion batteries down and affect their performance in the long run.

Don’t Leave An E-bike Battery On Charge Unattended
It’s best to be awake and in the vicinity when charging your E-bike in-case any issues arise. Should the battery feel likes it’s overheating you should unplug it immediately. Overcharging the battery can be potentially hazardous
Remove Your Battery When Transporting Your E-bike
You should remove the battery from the E-bike when transporting it. Particularly if using a car rack. This will keep it out of the elements and reduce the weight of the bike on the rack.

Clean Carefully
- Turn off the E-bike
- Remove Battery and ensure port cap is secured
- Avoid using a power washer
- Do not wash the bike upside down
- Refrain from using cleaning spray that has strong chemicals
- Dry your E-bike before storing it
Register your E-bike with the manufacturer
To ensure you’re eligible for warranty it is imperative you register your new e-bike and/or battery with the manufacturer. Should their be a fault with the product this is the only way to ensure you’re covered.
Re-Cycle Your E-Bike Battery
When replacing your old or damaged E-bike battery bring it with you to the store you’re purchasing a new one from and they will be able to recycle it for you.
If the battery is heavily damaged it is imperative you do not touch it with your bare hands and you should ensure it is kept in a safe place outdoors. Take it the bicycle store your purchasing a replacement from and they will dispose of it for you.
