Did you know that under Irish law, standard electric bikes (limited to 250W and 25km/h) are treated the same as regular bicycles? This means that they are permitted on all cycling infrastructure in Cork, and opens up a variety of specialised greenways and off-road trails that are perfect for e-bike exploration.
Let’s take a look at some of the cycling routes in and around Cork, and explore the suitability of these for those riding electric bikes. If you are new to eBike riding, you’ll want to decide on the type of bike you want before you begin. This will largely depend on the type of riding you intend to do and the terrain you favour. We’ll look at some options for touring eBikes and electric mountain bikes, so that you can plan your leisure riding in the Cork area.
Paved & Scenic Greenways in Cork
There are many different types of cycle paths to explore, and Ireland is well known for its cycling infrastructure. If you are looking to discover more of your local area on your eBike, these paved and scenic greenways are a great way to start and are ideal for touring eBikes. These routes are mostly flat and traffic-free, making them perfect for a smooth, assisted ride. Some of our favourites include:
Cork Harbour Greenway (the Marina to Passage West). This is a 10km scenic route that takes you along an old railway line, passing Blackrock Castle and Páirc Uí Chaoimh. This impressive route is a great place to start exploring with your touring eBike, and features stunning harbour views and several great places to stop for a coffee along the way.
Midleton to Youghal Greenway. This is a newly opened off-road trail, running through 23km of beautiful countryside in East Cork. This is a dedicated path that avoids busy roads, making it ideal for those who are cycling with children or beginners, and it connects two historic towns, so there are plenty of opportunities to discover more about this picturesque part of the world.
Old Crosshaven Railway Path. This railway path is a flat, paved loop that runs for 5-8km, following the Owenabue River. This is a stunning area to explore, with coastal scenery and fabulous views, and it offers a consistent stretch of easy terrain so that you can relax and enjoy your ride.
Ballincollig Regional Park. The Ballincollig Regional Park contains a network of flat, safe and enclosed paths that range from 1km to 7km in length. These offer a variety of great opportunities to explore, and are perfect for beginners or those cycling with young children.

Off-Road and Forest Trails
If you have an electric mountain bike or are considering investing in one, you’ll love these off-road and forest trails. Many of these trails feature hilly terrain where motor assistance is a major benefit, and these are well-suited to eMTBs.
Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails. This is Ireland’s largest mountain bike network, with over 90 km of trails to explore. These are very popular with E-bike riders, who love to tackle the steeper ‘Red Grade’ loops like the Castlepook Loop (51km) or the Garrane Loop (35km), and you can plan short or extended trips here.
Sam’s Farm Bike Trails. When you discover Sam’s Farm Bike Trails, you’ll find a dedicated MTB park near Dunmanway with more than 15km of technical single track. There are several trails specifically marked as popular for e-bikers, such as the Bread and Butter trail and Tri na Cheila.
Garryduff Woods Forest Recreational Area. This is a great area to explore if you’re looking for an introduction to electric mountain biking, with a selection of easy-to-moderate loops of around 6-7km. The woodland paths are a pleasure to ride and well-suited to eBikes, giving you a natural forest experience without extreme technical difficulty.
Tracton Woods. Tracton Woods is ideal for the more adventurous rider, with technical cross-country loops featuring significant roots and rollers that are perfect for confident e-MTB riders. This is not for the faint-hearted, with some very steep trails and complex paths, but it’s a popular spot for those who have really got the mountain bike bug.

Getting Started on the Cycle Trails
Of course, when you’re starting out on your eBike, it’s essential to be well prepared to keep yourself and other cyclists safe. If you have been used to a traditional bike, you’ll be familiar with the etiquette of cycling and riding on the roads, but if you haven’t ridden for a long time, you might benefit from a refresher.
Your safety is paramount when you are cycling, and this may be even more important when you are using an electric bike since you have more power on board. While the cycle routes in Cork city are improving, there are still many areas where cycle paths are not connected, and maintenance is not consistent. It is a good idea to plan your routes carefully and ensure that you use safe cycle paths and bike lanes wherever possible.
Take it slowly at first as you begin to explore cycle trails around your home, and talk to other cyclists to find out more about the options. Joining a cycling community can help you to make new friends as well as discover the best spots for a ride, and you will find excellent cycling networks in the Cork area.
