The popularity of Electric Bikes in Ireland continues to rise and as such we get asked many questions from customers curious about buying an E-bike so we’ve created this FAQ post to help get you up to speed!

WHY?

This is because fewer calories are burned per km when using an E-bike – a testament to their effortless nature.
  • It’s Fun:  The enjoyment you get from cycling an electric bike can’t be overstated. From their acceleration from a standstill to the ease of breezing up hills effortlessly, it’s the ultimate combination of practicality and fun.

HOW?

  • How does it work? The motor engages as you pedal. Most E-Bikes have varying levels of ‘pedal assistance’ and you can even turn it off should you wish for a more challenging cycle.
  • How often do you need to charge an electric bike battery? It depends on the motor, however generally they can reach around 100km before requiring a charge. That’s the equivalent of cycling from Cork City to Youghal and back!
  • How long does it take to charge an electric bike? It generally takes 3-5 hours to fully charge an e-bikes battery.
  • How Many Types of E-Bike? We have a varied range of Electric Bikes available. From models specific to commuting to those that feel at home on the trails we can cater for your needs!
  • How much do e-bikes weigh? Electric Bikes are heavier than regular bicycles due to the inclusion of the motor. There are some lighter models however such as the Orbea Vibe which weigh around the same as your average mountain bike (15kg).
  • How much are they? We stock electric bikes from €1,350 upwards.
  • How do I clean my e-bike? The same way you would clean any bicycle. Some warm soapy water and a sponge will do the trick. You can also purchase specialist cleaning products.
  • How do I keep my bike safe? A good quality lock/s is key. Also think about where you’re locking the bike. It’s best to do it in a public place with CCTVThieves go for easy pickings and the best deterrent is a strong lock in public view. Also make note of your bikes serial number which is essential to prove the bike is yours.

WHAT?

  • What makes an electric bike different to a moped? Technically an E-Bike is pedal assisted as opposed to a moped which is fully reliant on a throttle and motor. Legally a license is not required to use an Electric Bike.
  • What’s the difference between the motor’s? Motor’s come with varying levels of quality which mainly determines their longevity and power output. A motor’s quality would generally correlate with the price of the e-bike; with the top models often equipped with the best in class motors such as those manufactured by Bosch.
  • What’s the maintenance cost of running an E-Bike? It’s similar to that of a regular bicycle with the main difference being having to replace the battery after a few years of use. There is also the cost of having to charge the battery which is roughly €1 per charge.
  • What is the life span of an e-bike battery? Generally, an e-bike battery will last 2-4 years and cost between €400-€800 to replace depending on the quality of the motor and the amount of usage.
  • What’s the best electric bike? There is no right answer as some models will be better suited to your personal requirements than others. Commuters, Road Cyclists, Mountain Bikers and those who love to cycle an e-bike recreationally will be suited to different models.

CAN I?

  • Can I cycle an Electric bike in the rain? Yes absolutely, they’re perfectly adept to the weather we get in Ireland !
  • Can I cycle without a license? Yes, E-bikes don’t require a license to cycle them.
  • Can I still cycle if the battery runs out? Yes you can, however due to the weight of the bike it will be a little more challenging than a regular bike.
