Races in the Cork Area

Cork City and the local area offer a wide range of opportunities to get out there and run, and whether you want to train on marathon routes or join with others for social running events, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the events and races in Cork you won’t want to miss:

Cork City Marathon. The Cork City Marathon, sponsored by Analog Devices, is an annual event and the next race will be held on 6th June 2027 and offers full marathon, half marathon and 10k races. Places for the marathon are being allocated via a ballot system in 2027, but you may still be able to access a charity place to take part in the race while raising funds. The marathon route begins on St Patrick’s Street and takes a loop around Cork, while the 10k race is in the popular Marina area which is also perfect for a training run!

RunCork Half Marathon. If you’re up for a half marathon challenge, you’ll love the RunCork Half Marathon with its route along Cork Marina and the banks of the River Lee. This will take place on 7th February 2027 at 9am and is limited to 2,500 entries so get in quick in September 2026 when entries open. This gives you plenty of time to train and prepare, and all participants will receive a race pack and a Finisher’s medal.

Kinsale 10 Mile Road Race. The Kinsale 10 Mile Road Race is an annual event in the local running calendar, and it is known for the fast downhill over the final five miles. The race takes place in early spring and will be held on 28th February 2027 at 10.30am. Entry costs €25 plus processing fee, and all participants will receive a race t-shirt. You can join the race to enjoy the social occasion and you’ll also be doing your bit for the local area, since all proceeds go to Kinsale Community School Track Facilities, Riverstick Kinsale Athletic Club, Kinsale Your Support Services and Clontead Kinsale Community Games.

Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile. Arranged by the Kinsale Triathlon Club, the Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile is held to raise funds for charity and is known as the fastest five mile course in Munster. The route is beautiful, with scenic views along the Bandon river, finishing in the Kinsale town centre with a great crowd to celebrate as every participant comes in. This is a very popular event and is always held on the Friday evening of the August bank holiday weekend. It’s expected to sell out, so keep an eye open for 2027 sign ups.

Cork Parkruns. If you’re new to running or if you are beginning to train for a longer challenge, Cork parkruns are a great place to start. Parkrun is a free national event and there are around twenty parkrun events across Cork county each Sunday at 9.30am. Participants are welcome to walk, jog or run the 5k course, and there is a junior parkrun of 2km available for all 4-14 year olds alongside. Parkrun is a positive, inclusive space that aims to build community and fitness, giving everyone a chance to run without pressure. We recommend Tramore Valley parkrun and Glen River parkrun as central options that are easily accessible from Cork city centre, and the Ballincollig Regional Park parkrun for a flatter course that runs through the scenic regional park area.

Getting Started With Races and Events in Cork

If you’re new to the area, or to running, you can rest assured that there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Running clubs are an excellent way to meet other runners, and you’ll find short, medium and long distance fixtures across the county throughout the year.

For new runners, we recommend:

  • Setting manageable goals. If you’re just starting out, a marathon is not a realistic goal to aim for just yet, but building up gradually will allow you to get there at your own pace. The Couch to 5K programme is an excellent way to develop your stamina while you are having fun, and you can choose your favourite celebrity VoiceOver to keep you inspired as you progress through the weeks.
  • Social running. Running with others can help you to stay motivated and get out there in all weathers, so it is a good idea to recruit friends to run with you or join a local running club. Many groups have different events and social runs several times a week, and some have ladies only nights and accessible events to ensure that everyone is included. If you do not find your perfect fit straight away, try another running club with a different approach.
  • Wear the right clothing. The right running clothing can make all the difference to your comfort when you are running, especially in extreme weather. When it is very hot, you’ll need light clothing with UV protection and sunglasses or a visor, and when it’s cold and wet, you’ll need waterproof layers.
  • Choose good running shoes. The best running shoes for you will depend on your running style and your gait, and you will need to consider the terrain you run on, as well. Weather conditions may affect the shoes you wear, and a firm grip is helpful when it’s wet underfoot. Many of the leading brands include innovative sports technology that can help you to increase your personal bests, and we can help you to find the perfect fit.
