When you’re starting out as a surfer, decisions about your kit can feel overwhelming and doing your research can help you to make the most of your investment. Watching the pros, you’ll see shortboards, longboards and foamies, all in different lengths and widths, and it’s not easy to work out what to choose. Getting the size of your board right will make the whole process much easier and help you to feel confident on the waves.

Here in Ireland, we’re lucky to have a great range of beautiful beaches, including the world famous Bundoran and Lahinch, and you’ll find that many are well suited to beginners as they get to grips with the art of surfing. Let’s take a look at surfboard sizing and share all the information you need to work out the best options for you.

Surfboards: Size Matters

The first thing to bear in mind is that more experienced surfers often use smaller boards, because these are more responsive and can offer superior handling. Many beginners believe that a small board will be the best choice because it is easier to manoeuvre, but the opposite is true. A larger board will float better and paddle faster, so you’ll be able to find your way with surfing without exhausting yourself, and this is very important when you’re practicing.

As with any new sport, learning to surf is all about the practice and the more you can get out on the water, the faster you’ll improve. You’ll need a good wetsuit to cope with spending long periods of time in the water in Ireland, where the sea is cold all year round, and finding a board that really works for you will make all the difference.

Your Surfboard: Length, Width and Volume

There are three important elements to consider when you are choosing what size surfboard to try: length, width and volume. Here’s the information you need:

Length. We recommend that most adult beginners try a board that is between 8 and 9 feet long when they are first learning to surf. These are often referred to as ‘foamies’ or beginner longboards, and are used by surf schools because they are the best entry level option. A longer board such as this is much easier to paddle, even for those who have not built up their upper body strength yet, and enables you to catch the waves earlier. You’ll also find that it offers a more stable base so that you can attempt standing and finding your balance more easily. Shorter adults or teenagers might opt for a slightly shorter foam board, perhaps 7’6” – 8’.

Width. The width of your surfboard is a very important factor in its stability, and a wide board will be much easier to manage when you are first trying to stand up. Beginner boards are usually around 20 – 23 inches wide, and although the narrower boards may look appealing, they will not give you the same balance so you will not be able to progress in the same way.

Volume. You’ll notice that surf shops often mention volume, measured in litres, and this is a helpful measurement that combines length, width and thickness. The volume you should opt for is usually determined by your weight, with those under 65kg advised to try a 60-70 litre board when they are starting out, while those between 65 and 80 kg are likely to find a volume of 70-85 litres more helpful. For surfers from 80-95kg, a volume of 85-100 litres is ideal, while surfers over 95kg will find boards with more than 100 litres volumes the best choice. As you gain experience, you’ll learn how to handle a board with less volume, regardless of your own weight, but a high volume will give you the float you need to get started.

Best Surfboards for Beginners

As well as the length, width and volume, you’ll need to consider whether you want a soft top or a hard board. We always recommend soft top boards, or foamies, for beginners as these are safer and more buoyant, as well as more durable when you’re learning the ropes. Here are a few of our favourites:

Vision Ignite 8ft Longboard – Blue/Psychedelic
  1. Vision Ignite 8ft Longboard. New surfers love this beginner level soft board, which features the Vision Tri-Fin System for strength and durability. The Vision Ignite 8ft Longboard is a popular choice with surf schools and those who are building up their skills, and will be your training buddy as you master the basics and get used to standing up on your board.
Ocean and Earth SSB Surf School Softboard 8ft6inch Blue
  • Ocean and Earth SSB Surf School Softboard. The SSB Surf School Soft Board range is designed for beginner and intermediate level surfers and features template shapes designed by former WSL world number five, Phil ‘Macca’ Macdonald. We love the increased nose rocker to minimise nose diving and make paddling through the waves easier.
Ocean and Earth The General Epoxy Softboard 8ft0inch 61L Sky Blue
  • Ocean and Earth The General Softboard. If you are taller or heavier, you’ll benefit from having a larger board to work with when you first start surfing, and the Ocean and Earth The General Epoxy Softboard is a great choice at 8ft long. This is one of the most versatile boards in the Creative Army Range and the modern rocker is ideal for precise turns and fast trimming.
Vision XPS Take-Off Whopper Cyan/Flash
  • Vision XPS Take-Off Whopper. You’ll love the Vision XPS Take-Off Whopper if you’re a taller surfer, as it will give you the length and volume you need to make it easier to manoeuvre in the water when you are learning to surf. The enhanced IXPE deck gives this board a tougher, more premium feel, as well as enhanced shock absorption for a more comfortable ride.
Ocean and Earth Ezi-Rider Softboard 8ft0inch 80L Lime
  • Ocean and Earth Ezi-Rider Softboard. Another great option for beginners, the 8ft Ocean and Earth Ezi-Rider Softboard has a stable, versatile template shape that is ideal for entry level surfing.
